Wilderness Explorers at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

As frequent visitors to Disney Parks, we appreciate the “bonus” programs they run at various locations.

T

he Wilderness Explorer program at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is one of our favorites. Not only is this a fun activity for the whole family, it’s free so your budget will love it.

Kids (and adults, there is no height restriction) can sign up to become Wilderness Explorers at one of many outposts throughout the park. We usually get our collector book at the first one past the gate to be sure we don’t miss anything. (As you can see from the photo above, the EJ’s handbook usually ends up pretty worn out by the end of a few days of visits.)

I have to be honest here, we have never actually completed the entire collection of Wilderness Explorer badges and I hear there are more since our last visit. Yes, the troop leaders have even traveled to Pandora – The World of Avatar so you can earn two badges in the land of banshees, bioluminescence, and beauty

.

There is so much to do at Disney’s Animal Kingdom that we stay fairly busy but stopping at the Wilderness Explorer spots has become a part of every visit. The troop leaders are super helpful with the kids and it’s nice for them to have the interaction with cast members.

EJ enjoys going through our travel photos and made sure to remind me of the fun he had identifying different rodents and bugs while he was working on his “sticker badges.” He’s been participating in this program since he was seven and still enjoys it at eleven. He loves it when we work together on it as a family too.

As kids work through the Wilderness Explorer Handbook, they learn about animals, birds, recycling, the environment, and life in other countries (we learned about South Africa from a cast member.)

As a homeschooling family we appreciate opportunities where learning and fun go hand in hand and the Wilderness Explorer program adds to the already amazing Kilimanjaro Safaris and Rafiki’s Planet Watch at Disney’s Animal Kingdom that help traveling kids learn about our amazing world.

Exploring Disney’s Animal Kingdom is sure to give you an appetite so be sure to check out Amanda’s review of the Tusker House Character Dining. It’s on my list for our next visit!

  1. I love the Wilderness Explores! It is such a great way to incorporate a fantastic film with actual learning about our planet! I really appreciate that Disney added this to Animal Kingdom.
