As I was looking through my copy of the Five Roses Cookbook (my gramma’s favorite) looking for a recipe that began with a G, I came across the page for Griddle Cakes and thought how perfect since we are heading into pancake breakfast season here in Calgary (aka Stampede Week).
In a short 16 days, the Calgary Stampede will kick off with the amazing Calgary Stampede Parade. Each year thousands of folks line the streets of downtown Calgary to watch this spectacular event (and trust me, this means a very early morning for those wanting a front row seat!) I’ll be posting from the media area again this year (lucky me!) so be sure to follow me on Twitter and Instagram @misskimmy13 for all the news.
I’ve always loved the Stampede and even when I haven’t been home for it I’ve done my best to watch the parade, rodeo, and chuckwagon races from wherever I’m traveling.
I’ve also organized my fair share of Stampede Breakfasts complete with pancakes (hot cakes, griddle cakes…you get the picture) sausages and, if you are fortunate, baked beans (beans for breakfast you say…they were a staple of the chuckwagon cookout on the cattle drives so I always include them on my menu).
Now for those of you who have never done something like this, organizing, shopping for, cooking, and serving breakfast for 2000 or so hungry cowpokes is no easy feat. It takes a ton of volunteer hours and commitment.
Thankfully we are blessed with some great folks here in Calgary who make the commitment to volunteer each and every year.
By now I know you are wishing you had made plans to come to our fair city for Stampede this year so you can join us for some hospitality and some hot and fluffy cakes fresh off the grill but if you can’t make it here’s my gramma’s favorite recipe for griddle cakes (the ones made with buttermilk of course)!
Now about next year…it’s never too early to start planning!
